February 19, 2015

The Southeast Chapter of TAWWA joined forces with the Southeast Texas Section of WEAT to host our annual Half-day Seminar.  This year’s event was hosted at the Houston Marriott Westchase and featured a variety of topics and speakers.  Bech Bruun, Texas Water Development Board Member started off the morning with a follow up to his 2014 keynote address on SWIFT Fund Implementation.  Later in the morning, Louis Herrin, TCEQ, informed and entertained the crowd with a lively explanation of Texas Administrative Code Chapter 2017 Revisions.  Esther Harrah, SAWS Program Manager, and David Timmermann, Black and Veatch Program Manager, provided a tag-team overview of the SAWS Aquifer Storage and Recovery / Desalination Facility Delivery Program.  A legislative update was provided with a focus on both wastewater considerations, provided by Julie Nahrgang, WEAT Executive Director, and water considerations, provided by Mike Howe, Texas AWWA Executive Director.  The morning’s presentations were interspersed with student paper presentations provided by two members of the engineering communities next generation, Amin Kiaghadi and Matiara Ayu Sari.  The seminar was topped off by not one, but six representatives from the community’s major water providers.  The esteemed panel included Jace Houston, SJRA; Mark Loethen, City of Houston; Ivan Langford, GCWA; Ron Bottoms, City of Baytown; Greg Olinger, CWA; and Allen Bogard, City of Sugar Land.  The panel answered questions regarding the challenges and opportunities associated with providing water to one of the fasted growing regions in the United States.
