‘Tis the Season of Giving Back

What makes you get into the holiday season – is it the festive coffee cups, change in weather, or families coming from all places to share meals together? For me, it’s families coming together, and not just my immediate family, but the one I work with and other communities I’m involved in.

With being in the business of water, we are a resource of the community. So, why not instill a sense of family and connectedness with the customers you serve each day. We are a daily aspect in their lives, and, in this season of giving, it’s great idea to do more and give back.

One way my company gives back during the holiday season is through an initiative we call Project Wishbone where we donate Thanksgiving meals to our customers within our affordability program. They have the option between ham or turkey, and they get two sides with either choice. Once we receive the meals, our employees will hand-deliver them or they are mailed directly to the customer.

This initiative allows us to interact with customers in a different way, and gives them a chance to see the people that make the water work like magic. Jennifer McKnight, our area manager within Granbury, TX, said she loved getting to have time to just talk with the customers and ask about how they are spending their Thanksgiving. She also shared with me that numerous customers will tell her they would not be having a big meal if it were not for these meals being delivered.

“I am humbled to get to be a part of such a wonderful project.  Delivering meals to others makes me think about my own blessings and appreciate all that I have, especially good health.  Many of those receiving boxes were facing critical illnesses, and it made me feel happy to be able to take their mind away from their suffering, if only for a few minutes,” said Jennifer.

Personally, I believe it’s essential to include social responsibility within the inner workings of a utility, especially one as crucial as water. I think not only is it just good to help others, but it’s coming to be expected by customers as the generations grow older, one example being millennials. Luckily, I am one, so I can attest to this. We want to see the realness behind people or brands, and what they stand for.

So, I challenge all who reads this - what will you do for this winter holiday?
