The Young Professionals Committee promotes involvement of young professionals in the drinking water industry in the activities of the Southeast Texas Section of the American Water Works Association and encourages interaction between those new to the industry and seasoned professionals. The Young Professionals Committee often works with young professionals from other industry associations to network and volunteer in the community.

A young professional is defined as anyone 35 years of age or younger who is either working in the water industry or is a student in the field.

YP Volunteering Event with BEARing Gifts Program

December 7, 2018



The Southeast Chapter of TAWWA, jointly with American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) and American Society of Indian Engineers and Architects (ASIE) organized a volunteering event on December 7th with the BEARing Gifts Program.  BEAR (Be a Resource for CPS Kids) is a non-profit that provides emergency goods and services directly to children under the care of Child Protective Services (CPS) in Harris County.  BEAR hosts an annual program that provides holiday wishes to children under the care of CPS.  A total of 11 YPs attended this event to volunteer for a morning or an afternoon shift.  The volunteers worked on unloading bikes and other wish-list items from donors’ vehicles and organizing those by representative CPS offices.  Volunteers also regrouped and repacked gift items by recipient to make sure the kids receive all the wish-list items properly.  It was a fun and rewarding experience.  This event was part of the Houston area Young Members Initiative (YMI) quarterly events .


YP Technical Lunch at City of Houston 69th Street WWTP

November 15, 2018




The Southeast Chapter of TAWWA organized a technical session for young professionals at the City of Houston 69th Street WWTP on November 15th.  22 YPs attended the event that involved demonstration of alternate dewatering technology which was a part of the Houston Water’s Innovation Hub demonstration projects.  Houston Water’s Innovation Hub is a partnership between a variety of water technology companies and organizations aimed at identifying, prioritizing, evaluating, demonstrating, and showcasing current and emerging innovations for drinking, waste, and storm water management.  The partnership consists of collaborators (City and a Hub management company), partners (universities, GOs, and NGOs), and a national advisory team (research organizations and companies).  The technical session also involved a poster presentation and a Q&A session during lunch.  YPs had the opportunity to learn more about the goals and future plans of the Houston Water’s Innovation Hub.



YP Technical Lunch at HOBAS Pipe Facilities

The Southeast Chapter of TAWWA organized a technical tour for young professionals at the HOBAS Pipe Facilities in Houston.  18 YPs attended the event that involved a classroom session about the production and applications of the fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar pipes.  The class was followed by a tour of the production facility and a Q&A session.  The attendees were provided Professional Development Hours certificates at the end of the tour.





YP Social at Astros Game

June 2018


TAWWA, jointly with WEAT, organized a sold out Astros game YP social event on June 22, 2018. This event was sponsored by Vector Controls and Automation Group. There were 30 participants in this event who came to support their home team- Houston Astros against the Kansas City Royals.  Royals won at the end, but the participants had a great time.




YPs Volunteer at the Houston Food Bank

February 2018


The southeast chapter of TAWWA and WEAT jointly hosted a volunteer event at the Houston Food Bank on February 22nd, 2018.  Eight young professionals volunteered on that day. The volunteers helped assemble food for the Senior Box Program, which aims at improving health and well-being of income eligible seniors.  This was an exciting event and great way to give back to the community.






December 2017


Approximately 20 YP’s from AWWA, WEAT and ASCE came together to socialize and celebrate the holiday season. YP’s were encouraged to wear their ugly sweaters and had a great time networking with other YP’s at the Axelrad Beer Garden.



Buffalo Bayou Clean-up

November 2017


About 20 YP’s showed up to help clean up the Buffalo Bayou by shoveling silt away from buried trees from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.  Lunch was provided to the volunteers after all the hard work.  This is the third year this event has been organized by the Southeast Chapter of TAWWA.





June 27, 2017 – Astros Game YP Event

On June 27th, 2017, TAWWA and WEAT jointly organized an Young Professionals Social Event where YPs got a chance to network with their peers and watch Houston Astros play the Oakland Athletics at the Minute Maid Park.  There were 26 attendees at the fun event.
